Restricted Keyways and Patented Key Control Explained
Key control is the ability to know, with confidence, how many working copies of a key exist. Standard hardware offers almost none of it. Blanks for common residential keyways are stocked by hardware stores, self service kiosks, and online cutters, so any key that leaves your sight for ten minutes can come back with a sibling. Restricted and patented systems exist to close that gap, and they do it through two independent mechanisms that are worth separating.
The Physical Restriction: Keyway Geometry
A keyway is the shaped channel a key blade slides through, defined by wards, grooves, and ribs milled into the cylinder plug. A blank must match that profile exactly to enter. Restricted systems use profiles designed so that no commonly stocked blank fits, often with deep undercuts, angled milling, or asymmetric sections that are difficult to produce on standard duplicating equipment.
This is a real barrier, but by itself it is only an availability barrier. If the blank profile is not otherwise protected, an aftermarket supplier can eventually tool up and produce compatible blanks, and the restriction quietly evaporates.
The Legal Restriction: Patent Protection
The second leg is a patent covering the blank, the key and cylinder interaction, or a mechanical feature such as a moving element in the blade. A patent, as the USPTO explains in its overview of patent essentials, confers the right to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling the invention, and the holder may initiate legal action against infringement. That is what stops a third party from producing compatible blanks: not the difficulty of the milling, but the exclusive right.
The critical point is that this right has a finite term. Under the USPTO's Manual of Patent Examining Procedure, section 2701 on patent term, for applications filed on or after June 8, 1995, the term runs twenty years from the United States filing date, or from the earliest referenced filing date where priority is claimed. Utility patents also require maintenance fees to stay in force.
Dealer Networks and Signature Cards
Around those two mechanisms sits an administrative layer. Manufacturers of restricted systems typically distribute blanks only to authorized dealers under contract, and the dealer maintains a record of who is entitled to order keys for a given system. The usual instrument is a signature card or authorization letter naming specific individuals; a duplication request from anyone else is refused. Some systems add serialized blanks so every cut key is traceable.
This layer is contractual rather than statutory, which means its strength depends on the dealer actually following its own procedure. It is reasonable to ask a prospective dealer how requests are verified and what record they keep.
What Happens When a Patent Expires
When the term ends, the exclusive right ends with it. Nothing stops an aftermarket manufacturer from producing blanks for that profile, and in practice blanks for expired profiles do reach general distribution. The keyway still restricts which blanks fit, but the population of people who can obtain a fitting blank grows considerably.
For a long lived installation this is a planning question, not a crisis. Ask what patent covers the system you are considering and when it was filed, because a system with three years of term remaining and one with fifteen are different purchases at the same price.
Cost and Who It Is Actually For
Restricted systems carry a premium on cylinders and a higher per key cost, plus the friction of ordering through a single channel. For institutions, that maps cleanly onto a genuine need: high key populations, regular turnover, and a real cost to an uncontrolled copy. For a single family home, the calculus is different, and many households get most of the practical benefit simply by rekeying at the moments when key control is uncertain.
Verifying a Key Control Claim
Treat marketing language as a starting point, not evidence. Ask for the patent number and check its status and filing date in the USPTO's public records. Ask whether the profile is exclusive to your dealer territory or shared broadly. Ask what the duplication authorization process actually is and who is on the card. Ask whether the cylinder itself is listed to a recognized standard rather than merely described as high security, since keyway restriction and physical attack resistance are separate properties and a system can have one without the other.
