About Need Locks

What this site is

Need Locks is an independent publication about locks, door hardware, and practical physical security. It has three parts: a nationwide locksmith directory covering every US state, a library of buying guides and explainers on lock mechanisms, standards, and hardware, and resources plus tools for the moments when you need a professional, fast.

Where the directory data comes from

Directory listings are compiled from public map data, primarily the Overture Maps Foundation places dataset, cleaned and deduplicated by us. We list each business's public name, address, phone, and website so you can verify it directly. We do not accept payment for placement, we do not rank businesses, and no business can pay to appear or to be removed from public data. If a listing is wrong or you own a business shown here, contact us and we will correct or remove it.

How we make money

Some product links in our buying guides are affiliate links, which means the merchant pays us a commission if you buy after clicking, at no extra cost to you. Directory listings and rankings are never affected by affiliate relationships. Details are in our affiliate disclosure.
