Impact and Forced Entry Standards for Exterior Doors

A burglar does not attack a deadbolt. He attacks an opening: a door slab, a frame, hinges, a strike, and whatever is behind the strike. That is why the recognized forced entry standards evaluate the complete assembly rather than any single component, and why a high lock grade on a weak frame buys you very little.

The assembly is the unit of measurement

The best known North American document in this space is ASTM F476, Standard Test Methods for Security of Swinging Door Assemblies. Its scope is explicit that it covers door assemblies of various materials and construction, including the individual components: hinge, lock, door, strike, and jamb. The stated purpose is to measure how well the assembly restrains, delays, or frustrates a break in attempt.

That framing matters for homeowners. When a product listing claims compliance with a forced entry method, the claim belongs to a tested configuration, not to a part you can pull out and drop into your own opening. Swap the frame, change the hinges, or use different fasteners and you are outside the tested condition.

Load, impact, and tool phases

Forced entry test methods generally work through escalating categories of attack rather than one dramatic event. Static load testing applies steady force at the lock edge and at the bolt to see whether the latching hardware or the frame yields. Impact testing delivers repeated blows, which is the closest laboratory analogue to a shoulder or a boot. Tool or manipulation phases introduce hand tools such as pry bars against the gap between door and frame.

Each phase probes a different failure mode. Static load finds weak strike anchorage. Impact finds brittle jamb material and short fasteners. Tool attack finds excessive clearances and short bolt engagement. An assembly can pass one phase convincingly and fail the next, which is exactly why the standards run all of them.

Impact resistance is a different question

Buyers routinely confuse a security rating with a storm rating. They measure unrelated things. Windborne debris and storm shelter requirements are governed by separate documents such as the ICC 500 standard for the design and construction of storm shelters, which addresses wind pressures and debris impact rather than burglary resistance.

The Steel Door Institute's guideline for specifying windstorm products makes a related point that generalizes well: openings in debris regions must resist simulated missile impacts combined with pressure cycling, and substitution of other hardware or materials is not permitted without additional testing by the listing agency. A door certified for a storm event has proven something specific about wind and debris. It has not necessarily proven anything about a pry bar.

Where residential openings actually fail

In practice, the slab is rarely the weak link. Failures cluster at the strike area, where a short screw lands in trim or in the shim gap instead of the structural framing behind the jamb, and at the hinge side, where the same fastener problem exists in mirror image. Wide clearances between door and frame reduce bolt engagement and give tools purchase. Split jamb legs are a common outcome because softwood jamb stock is thin and the load is concentrated over a very small area.

What an owner can actually specify

You can ask a manufacturer which test method an assembly was evaluated to, and in what configuration. You can specify long fasteners that reach framing at both the strike and the hinges. You can ask for a reinforced strike or a full length strike plate rather than a stamped one. You can reduce clearance and add a solid door or an insulated steel door where the existing slab is light.

None of these steps buys a rating, because ratings attach to tested assemblies rather than to retrofits. They do address the failure modes the test methods are designed to find, which is the practical goal. For work that touches egress, fire rated openings, or anything code regulated, confirm requirements with your local building department or a licensed contractor before you start.
