ADA Requirements for Door Hardware Operation and Force
Accessibility requirements for door hardware are often summarized as levers good, knobs bad. The actual standards are more interesting than that, because they specify performance rather than product type, and they cover four separate things: how the hardware is operated, where it is mounted, how much force opens the door, and how fast it closes.
Operation: the motion test
The governing idea comes from the operable parts provisions. Federal guidance on operable parts states that they must be usable with one hand and must not require tight grasping, pinching, or twisting of the wrist, or more than 5 pounds of force to operate.
Applied to doors, the U.S. Access Board's guidance on entrances, doors, and gates notes that hardware operable with a loose grip or closed fist, such as lever-shaped handles and U-shaped pulls, serves the widest range of users, while round doorknobs do not comply because they require wrist rotation. Latches and locks with small parts that must be manipulated can also fail if pinching is necessary, which catches some thumbturns and privacy buttons even when the main handle is fine.
Mounting height
Door hardware on an accessible route is required to sit between 34 and 48 inches above the floor or ground. That band is not arbitrary. It is the range reachable both by a seated user and by a standing user without stooping. It is also why an added surface bolt near the top of a door, or a slide bolt near the floor, tends to create a problem even where the primary lockset is compliant.
Opening force, and where it applies
The Access Board's guide to entrances, doors, and gates sets opening force under section 404.2.9 at a maximum of 5 pounds of force, excluding exterior hinged doors and fire doors.
Those exclusions matter and are widely misread. The standards do not set a maximum opening force for exterior hinged doors, because wind loading and weather sealing make a fixed number impractical. Fire doors are similarly excluded, since a rated assembly must close and latch positively against pressure. In both cases the exclusion is not permission to make a door hard to open; it means the number is set by other requirements rather than by the accessibility standard.
There is also a narrow exception for manual doors designed to be operated only by security personnel, such as in a jail or prison. Those are exempt from the hardware, closing speed, and opening force requirements while still having to meet everything else, including maneuvering clearance, and only where security personnel have sole control of the door.
Closing speed
A door that slams shut is a barrier even if it opens easily. Under section 404.2.8, door closers must take a minimum of 5 seconds to move the door from 90 degrees open to 12 degrees from the latch, and spring hinges must take a minimum of 1.5 seconds from 70 degrees to the closed position.
Note the direction of the requirement: these are minimum times, not maximums. The standard is guarding against doors that close too fast for someone moving slowly, using a mobility device, or carrying something. Most hydraulic closers have separate sweep and latch speed valves, and closing speed is one of the few accessibility parameters that can drift out of compliance over years as seals age and oil viscosity changes with temperature.
Where these requirements apply
The ADA Standards apply to places of public accommodation, commercial facilities, and state and local government facilities. A private single-family home is generally outside their scope. Multifamily housing sits in a more complicated space, where other federal and state requirements may apply depending on how and when the building was built and funded. Determining what applies to a specific project is a question for a licensed design professional and the local building department, not something to settle from a summary.
Worth adopting anyway
Even where none of this is legally required, the numbers describe a door that is simply easier to use. A lever at a reachable height, a slow closer, and a latch that does not require pinching benefit a person with full hand strength carrying a laundry basket exactly as much as they benefit someone with arthritis. Hardware outlives the household that chose it, and specifying to these limits is a low-cost hedge against a future where the people using the door have different capabilities than the people buying it.
