The instinct when a door feels insecure is to replace the lock. It is the most visible component, the easiest thing to buy, and almost never the limiting factor. A more productive approach is to assess the whole assembly first, then spend in order of delay gained per dollar, which usually means the money goes to the frame side of the opening rather than the door side.
Assess before you buy anything
Walk the door and record six things:
- The door core. Solid wood, solid core, or hollow core. Knock along the middle of the panel. A hollow core exterior door is a finding that changes the entire plan.
- The frame. Is the jamb sound, or split, soft, or previously repaired. Is the door square in the opening or has it settled.
- The hinges. Screw length, whether the leaves are loose, and on an outswing door whether the pins are exposed.
- The strike. Pull the strike plate off and look at the screws. Short screws terminating in the jamb board are the most common finding in the entire inspection.
- The cylinder and bolt. Does the deadbolt throw fully without lifting the door. How far does the cylinder protrude outside.
- The glazing. Any glass within reach of the interior thumbturn, including sidelights and transoms.
The ranked sequence
Standards work explains why the frame comes first. ASTM F476 is a test method for the security of swinging door assemblies, and its scope explicitly includes the individual components: the hinge, lock, door, strike, and jamb, with the objective of measuring the assembly’s capability to restrain or delay break-in attempts. The unit of measurement is the assembly. Upgrading one component while leaving its anchorage untouched does not move the assembly number.
In practice, ordered by return:
- Strike and jamb reinforcement. Getting fasteners into the structural framing behind the jamb, and distributing bolt load over a longer section of jamb rather than one mortise, addresses the dominant residential failure mode directly. It is the cheapest meaningful upgrade available.
- Hinge side fasteners. Same principle, opposite edge, routinely skipped.
- Correcting alignment. A deadbolt that does not fully extend, or a deadlatch plunger that has dropped into the strike opening instead of resting on its face, is a free fix that restores designed function.
- Cylinder upgrade. Worth doing when key control is the concern, when the existing cylinder is old or protruding, or after any event where keys may have circulated.
- Glazing film and auxiliary locks. Useful as the next tier, particularly where glass sits near interior hardware.
Cylinder upgrades within existing hardware
Many locksets accept a replacement cylinder without changing the visible hardware, which makes a targeted upgrade practical. Judge the replacement against a published standard rather than against packaging language. ANSI/BHMA A156.30 defines security performance based requirements for high security cylinders, covering the cylinder, its keys or credentials, its detainers, and its tailpiece or cam, with the manufacturer required to declare a security level the product meets in full. The same standard notes that its tests are performed under laboratory conditions and that real world results vary with installation, maintenance, and environment.
The two situations where a cylinder upgrade clearly earns its cost are restricted keyways where duplication is controlled, and any circumstance where you cannot account for every key that exists.
Keep expectations calibrated
The crime prevention research is worth reading before spending. The Center for Problem-Oriented Policing guide on burglary of single family houses reports that increasing the security of vulnerable houses can reduce victimization, but also that moderate lock security generally suffices and there is no evidence that more elaborate lock security reduces burglary. It notes that hardening is most effective when directed at homes actually at risk, and that installed devices only help if residents consistently use them.
That last clause deserves emphasis. A deadbolt that is not thrown is decorative.
When replacement is the honest answer
Hardening an existing door stops making sense when the substrate cannot hold an upgrade. A hollow core slab on an exterior opening, a jamb that is split or rotted along its length, a frame that has racked out of square, or a rough opening with no sound framing behind the jamb are all cases where reinforcement hardware simply transfers load into material that cannot carry it. At that point a new door and frame installed correctly is cheaper than a sequence of partial fixes, and it is the recommendation a competent contractor should give you.
Anything touching egress, fire rating, or structural framing belongs with a qualified contractor or locksmith, and where a permit or fire-rated assembly is involved, with your local building authority.
