Forced Entry Realities: Why the Jamb Fails Before the Lock
Pick up almost any residential entry door and the strongest component is the lock. The bolt is hardened steel. The cylinder is brass. Then follow where the force actually goes when someone throws their weight at the door, and you arrive at a strike plate held by two screws roughly three quarters of an inch long, biting into a jamb board that is often finger jointed pine, which is itself held to the framing by shims and finish nails. That is the real fastener chain, and it is the one that fails.
What the federal data says about how entry happens
Before optimizing against force, it helps to know how often force is even involved. Bureau of Justice Statistics victimization research on household burglary found that in a large share of incidents no force was used at all. In its analysis of victimization during household burglary, BJS reports that in forty percent of unlawful entries to unoccupied residences the offender simply came in through an unlocked door or window, and that among occupied residences offenders were about equally likely to enter through an open or an unlocked opening. Where force was used, damaging or removing doors was the most common method, well ahead of window screens.
Two conclusions follow. First, the cheapest security improvement available to most households is closing and locking what is already there. Second, when force does occur, the door is the target, which is exactly where the load path analysis matters.
The load path
A kick delivers a large force over a very short time to a small area of the door face. The door slab transmits that impulse to the bolt, the bolt transmits it to the strike plate, and the strike plate transmits it to whatever the strike screws are anchored in. If those screws terminate in the jamb board alone, the failure mode is almost always the same: the wood splits along the grain around the mortise, the jamb section tears away, and the door swings open with the deadbolt still fully extended and undamaged.
Nothing about that sequence involves defeating the lock. It involves defeating a piece of pine. This is why a homeowner can install an expensive high security cylinder and see no measurable change in resistance to the most common forced entry method.
Why standards test assemblies, not parts
The standards world figured this out long ago. ASTM F476 is a test method for the security of swinging door assemblies, and its scope explicitly covers the assembly together with its individual components including the hinge, lock, door, strike, and jamb. The published scope of ASTM F476 describes the objective as measuring the capability of a door assembly to restrain or delay and frustrate break in attempts, and the standard is aimed at the unskilled and low skilled attacker profile that dominates residential burglary.
The important word is assembly. A component rating tells you how a part performed on a bench. An assembly test tells you how the installed system behaves, which is the only number that describes your actual door.
Reinforcement priorities
Ranked roughly by delay gained per dollar spent, for a typical wood framed residential entry:
- Long screws into the framing. Replacing short strike and hinge screws with screws long enough to reach the structural stud behind the jamb transfers load out of the trim board and into the frame. It is inexpensive and it changes the failure mode.
- A full length strike reinforcement. Distributing load over a longer section of jamb rather than concentrating it at one mortise addresses the splitting failure directly.
- Correct bolt throw and alignment. A deadbolt that does not fully extend because the door has sagged is doing a fraction of its job. This is a free inspection.
- Hinge side reinforcement. Often neglected, and on an inswing door the hinge side carries real load.
- Cylinder upgrades. Genuinely worthwhile against manipulation and key control problems, but they address a different threat than kicking.
A note on expectations
Crime prevention research is more cautious about target hardening than most marketing suggests. The Center for Problem-Oriented Policing guide on burglary of single family houses notes that moderate lock security generally suffices and that there is no evidence more elaborate lock security reduces burglary, while also observing that hardening applied to homes actually at risk, such as after a break in, shows more promise than blanket upgrades.
Read together with the load path, that is a coherent recommendation. Get the assembly right, use what you have, and stop buying cylinder grades to solve a jamb problem.
