Deadbolt vs. Spring Latch: What Actually Resists Force
Look at the edge of a typical entry door and you will often see two bolts. The upper one is a solid rectangle with square corners. The lower one is a rounded wedge with one angled face. They are doing completely different jobs, and confusing them is the most common security mistake in residential hardware.
Two Different Mechanisms
The spring latch, or latch bolt, is the beveled one. A spring holds it extended, and the bevel faces the direction the door swings closed. When the door swings shut, the strike plate pushes on that bevel, the latch retracts, and the spring snaps it back out once it clears into the strike pocket. That is elegant convenience engineering. It is also the vulnerability: a component designed to retract when pushed on an angled face will retract when anything else pushes on that face.
A deadbolt has no spring driving it and no bevel. It is a square ended bar thrown by a thumbturn or key through a rack and pinion or cam linkage. Push on its face and nothing happens. The only path to retraction is rotating the mechanism.
Why a Latch Alone Is Not Security
The classic latch defeat, sliding a thin flexible card or shim into the gap to press the bevel, works because it does exactly what the strike plate does. Anti shim features such as a deadlatch plunger help, since a small secondary pin rides on the strike face and blocks the latch from retracting once the door is closed. But even a working deadlatch is defending a bolt with roughly half an inch of engagement in a thin strike.
Deadbolt throw length matters for the opposite reason. A longer bolt reaches further past the door edge, through the gap, and into the jamb and the framing behind it. That depth is what a spreading or prying attack has to overcome. The relevant American benchmark is ANSI/BHMA A156.36 for auxiliary locks, the standard covering residential and commercial deadbolts. It sets dimensional criteria and five families of tests: operational, cycle, strength, security, and finish.
What the Grade Testing Reveals
The numbers are instructive. Under A156.36, a Grade 1 deadlock must survive 250,000 opening and closing cycles, and the security testing includes withstanding 1,350 pounds of force applied against the deadbolt. Seven aggressive tests sit in that safety and security family.
Compare that with the standard governing the knob or lever assembly, ANSI/BHMA A156.2 for bored and preassembled locks and latches. Its Grade 1 durability requirement runs to one million cycles with a ten pound axial load, and its security family includes impact from two directions. The bored lock is being tested primarily as a high cycle operating device. The auxiliary lock standard is testing a bolt against static force. Those are different design intents made visible in the test protocols.
The Bolt Is Rarely What Breaks
In practice, a hardened deadbolt in a well installed frame almost never shears. What fails is everything around it. Standard strike plates are thin stamped steel held by short screws that bite only into the door jamb, which is typically a piece of trim lumber nailed to the rough framing. A kick transmits force through the bolt into that strike, the screws tear out, and the jamb splits along the grain.
This is why upgrading to a box strike with long screws that reach through the jamb into the stud behind it costs very little and changes the load path completely. The bolt then bears against framing rather than trim.
Pair Them, Never Substitute
The practical answer is not to choose. Use the latch for what it is good at, closing and holding the door in daily use, and use the deadbolt for resistance. A latch only entry door is unlocked to anyone with a shim. A deadbolt only door swings open in the wind.
