Seasonal Door Movement and Its Effect on Lock Function

A door that latches perfectly in February and refuses to close in July has not developed a lock problem. It has developed a moisture problem, and the lock is simply the part where you notice.

Wood follows the air around it

Wood is hygroscopic. It gains moisture when the surrounding air is humid and loses it when the air is dry, and it changes dimension as it does. Purdue Extension's publication on the shrinking and swelling of wood describes the mechanism directly: shrinking and swelling occur as wood changes moisture content in response to daily and seasonal changes in relative humidity, and finishes may slow the process but generally do not stop it.

The same publication explains equilibrium moisture content, the value a piece of wood eventually settles at for a given relative humidity. Its sorption curve puts wood held at roughly 30 percent relative humidity near 6 percent moisture content, and wood held at roughly 75 percent relative humidity near 14 percent. A door that cycles between those conditions every year is a component that changes size every year.

Movement is also directional. Wood moves far more across the grain than along it, which is why a door tends to grow in width rather than height, and why the binding usually shows up along the lock stile rather than at the top rail.

The frame is moving too

The jamb responds to the same cycle, and the framing behind it can move for reasons of its own. Soil moisture changes under a foundation, seasonal loading, and settlement in a newer house all shift openings slightly out of square. That movement is independent of the slab and can either mask or amplify what the door is doing. If several doors in one part of the house misbehave together, look at the structure rather than the doors.

Fiberglass and steel behave differently

Skinned doors do not swell the way solid wood does, but they are not inert. A steel or fiberglass slab expands and contracts with temperature rather than humidity, and dark colored doors on a sun exposed elevation see a wide temperature swing across a day. Their frames are often still wood, so the opening moves even when the slab does not. Weatherstripping compression also changes with temperature, which alone can make a door feel tight in summer and loose in winter without any dimensional change at all.

Symptoms across a year

  • Tight in humid months, fine in dry months, worst along the lock stile: classic moisture driven swelling in a wood door.
  • Tight in cold weather only, key turns hard even with the door open: lubricant or moisture in the cylinder, not door movement.
  • Rattles and drafts in winter, seals fine in summer: shrinkage plus compressed weatherstripping.
  • Binds at the top corner on the latch side and stays that way: hinge sag rather than seasonal movement.
  • Worsens steadily year over year without seasonal recovery: structural movement, worth a professional look.

The diagnostic that separates most of these is time. Seasonal problems reverse. Structural and hardware problems do not.

Manage the humidity first

Because the driver is relative humidity, controlling indoor conditions reduces the amplitude of the whole cycle. The EPA's mold course guidance advises that indoor relative humidity be kept below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. That range is recommended for mold and pest reasons, but it happens to keep interior woodwork in a much narrower moisture band as well. Running bath and kitchen exhaust fans, venting the dryer outdoors, and addressing crawl space and basement moisture all help.

Adjust in the worst season

Here is the rule that saves rework: make adjustments when the door is at its tightest, not at its most comfortable. If you plane a swollen door in August you will have gaps in January. If you shim a strike to suit a shrunken winter door, it will bind in summer.

Wait out one full cycle before removing material. Tighten hinge screws, adjust the strike, and confirm that the bolt throws fully in both the tightest and loosest seasons. Reserve planing for doors that genuinely bind year round, and seal any freshly cut edge so the exposed wood does not take on moisture faster than the rest of the slab.
