Choosing Hinges: Ball Bearing, Butt, Continuous, and Security Studs
A sagging door that scrapes the threshold and will not latch is almost never a lock problem. It is a hinge problem, and usually it started years earlier as a screw problem. Hinges are the least glamorous hardware on the opening and the component most likely to determine whether everything else keeps working.
Plain Bearing vs. Ball Bearing
A plain bearing hinge has knuckles that ride directly against each other, metal on metal. Friction is higher, wear is faster, and the wear is uneven because it concentrates where the load sits. A ball bearing hinge places hardened ball races between the knuckles so the pivoting load rolls instead of sliding.
The dividing line is weight combined with cycle count. Light interior doors that open a few times a day are fine on plain bearing hinges for decades. Heavy solid core doors, exterior doors with weatherstripping drag, and any door with a closer on it should be on ball bearing hinges. The rule of thumb most specifiers use is that anything with a door closer gets ball bearings, because a closer adds continuous spring load to every cycle.
The performance tiers are not marketing language. ANSI/BHMA A156.1, Butts and Hinges, defines graded requirements in which a Grade 1 hinge must pass 2.5 million opening and closing cycles on a door of specified weight, alongside lateral and vertical wear tests, friction tests, strength tests, and finish tests. The standard also includes a table specifying required metal gauge by hinge height, weight class, and grade, which is why two five-inch hinges can be very different objects.
Continuous Geared Hinges
A continuous hinge runs the full height of the door and distributes load along the entire edge rather than concentrating it at three or four points. This matters on doors that get abused: school entries, commercial back doors, or a heavy residential door that children swing on.
The other benefit is that a continuous hinge does not tear out of a damaged jamb the way a butt hinge does, because there is no single point carrying a large share of the load. The downsides are cost, a different door prep, and less flexibility in adjustment once installed.
How Many Hinges
Common practice scales hinge count with door height and weight:
- Two hinges on lightweight doors under about 60 inches tall
- Three hinges on standard 80 inch residential doors, which covers nearly every interior and entry door in a house
- Four hinges on doors approaching 90 inches, or on heavy solid core and clad exterior slabs
- An additional hinge for every additional 30 inches of height beyond that
Adding a fourth hinge to a heavy door is cheap insurance. Removing one to save money is where sagging starts.
Security Studs and Non-Removable Pins
On an outswinging door, the hinge barrels face the exterior. If the pins can be driven out, the door can be lifted off the frame from the hinge side regardless of how good the deadbolt is. Two countermeasures address this. A security stud is a projecting pin on one leaf that seats into a hole in the opposite leaf, so even with the pin removed the leaves cannot separate while the door is closed. A non-removable pin is mechanically retained by a set screw that is inaccessible when the door is shut.
A156.1 addresses this directly, covering hinges with non-removable pins to prevent unauthorized door removal, along with electrified hinge options and beveled tips. The hinge is also treated as a security component in forced entry testing. ASTM F476, Standard Test Methods for Security of Swinging Door Assemblies, evaluates the assembly as a system and explicitly includes the hinge, lock, door, strike, and jamb as individual components.
Fire Rated Openings Restrict Your Choices
On a fire rated assembly, hinges are not a free selection. Every component has to be listed for use in that assembly, because the rating belongs to the tested combination rather than to the door alone. Door assemblies earn ratings through fire endurance testing such as UL 10C, Positive Pressure Fire Tests of Door Assemblies, which exposes specimens to a controlled fire followed by a hose stream and produces data regulators use to judge suitability. Steel hinges are generally required; substituting a decorative non-listed hinge can void the rating. Confirm any fire door hardware change with your local authority having jurisdiction before ordering.
The Screws Matter More Than the Hinge
The best hinge in the world fails if it is held to the jamb by three-quarter inch screws biting into pine trim. Replace at least one screw per jamb leaf with a three inch screw that reaches the framing stud behind the jamb. That single change costs almost nothing and moves the door's weight from the trim into structure.
