Packaging that says Grade 1 is pointing at a real document with real numbers behind it. The grading system comes from ANSI/BHMA standards, written and maintained by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association, an accredited standards developer whose standards are produced under the ANSI Essential Requirements for openness, balance, consensus, and due process.
How the grading is structured
BHMA describes product grades as defined by progressive levels of performance benchmarks in each applicable standard, with grade 1 the highest, and certification backed by independent laboratory testing against cycle, operational, strength, security, and finish requirements.
That phrasing matters. The grade is not one score. A typical lock standard runs a battery of tests grouped into roughly six categories, and each test has its own threshold per grade. A product earns its grade by clearing every applicable threshold, so the grade reflects the weakest result, not the best one.
The test categories
- Operational. Can the door latch when pushed closed, and can the handle be worked without excessive effort? These limits are usually the same across grades because they exist for usability and accessibility, not toughness.
- Cycle. The lock goes on a machine that opens and closes it until the required count is reached, then gets rechecked for compliance.
- Strength. Static loads applied to levers, latches, bolts, and mechanisms to confirm they survive abuse and still operate.
- Security. Deliberate attacks: impacts, torque on a locked lever, loads driven into the bolt.
- Material evaluation. Probe impacts and similar checks on trim and rosettes.
- Finish. Corrosion and environmental exposure, typically identical for all grades.
What the actual numbers look like
Concrete examples make the tiers legible. For bored and preassembled locks, BHMA’s summary of ANSI/BHMA A156.2 notes that Grade 1 locks must pass one million cycles of opening and closing with a 10 pound axial load applied, that lever operated locks must open with a maximum torque of 28 inch-pounds, and that the security battery includes a 1,200 inch-pound locked lever torque test plus impact from two directions.
Residential deadbolts sit in their own standard and use letter grades rather than numbers. BHMA’s summary of ANSI/BHMA A156.40 describes seventeen security and strength tests, including loading the door against the deadbolt with 1,350 pounds of force, a durability requirement of 400,000 cycles for the top residential deadlatch grade, an operating torque cap of 9 inch-pounds, and finish evaluation by salt spray testing.
If you take one thing from those figures, take this: the gap between grades in the security category is usually far larger than the gap in the cycle category. A lower grade often means fewer impact blows survived, not a lock that wears out quickly.
The most common misreading
A grade applies to the lock, not to the opening. Nothing in the test protocol evaluates your door slab, your jamb, your framing, or how long the screws in your strike plate are. A Grade 1 deadbolt installed with three-quarter inch screws into a soft pine jamb will fail at the jamb, exactly as a cheaper lock would.
BHMA itself is candid about a second limit: because these are laboratory tests conducted under controlled conditions, there is no absolute correlation to actual field performance such as a product’s life span. The grade tells you a product cleared a defined bar, not that it will last a specific number of years in your weather, on your door, with your household.
Where the higher grade earns its cost
Spend on grade where the load is real: the front and back entries, any door reachable from a concealed area, and interior doors with genuinely high traffic such as a garage entry or a commercial-style office. A mid-grade product is generally proportionate for interior passage and privacy doors, closets, and openings where the failure mode is inconvenience rather than intrusion.
Confirming the claim
Packaging is marketing copy; certification is a record. The verifiable version of a grade claim names the specific standard, the grade, and a model number that can be looked up in BHMA’s certified products directory. If a listing says only that a product is built to Grade 1 standards without naming the standard or a certified model, treat it as an unverified claim and check the directory before believing it.
